Hyderabad University Bharat Rang Mahotsav Stage

Hyderabad’s higher education ecosystem found national visibility this month as students from the University of Hyderabad performed at the silver jubilee edition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav, one of the country’s largest theatre gatherings. The participation signals how university-led cultural production is increasingly shaping urban identity and creative economies beyond metropolitan centres.

The festival, curated annually by the National School of Drama under the Ministry of Culture, brings together theatre practitioners, institutions and independent ensembles from across India and abroad. For Hyderabad, representation at such a platform strengthens its positioning not only as a technology and pharmaceutical hub but also as a growing cultural capital. The Department of Theatre Arts at the university’s School of Arts and Communication presented a student-led production selected for the 25th anniversary programming. The play was staged in Hyderabad before travelling to Delhi, drawing audiences that included theatre scholars, practitioners and policy observers.

Academic leaders at the university said participation in Bharat Rang Mahotsav offers students exposure to national networks and professional critique, bridging classroom training with real-world performance ecosystems. Cultural economists note that such platforms contribute to the development of creative industries, which are increasingly recognised as drivers of inclusive urban growth.Hyderabad’s cultural infrastructure — from auditoriums to public performance spaces — has expanded in recent years alongside its IT corridors. Urban planners argue that balanced city development requires sustained investment in both hard infrastructure and cultural assets. Events such as Bharat Rang Mahotsav create demand for rehearsal studios, design workshops, stagecraft services and hospitality sectors, indirectly supporting local employment.

The student production foregrounded contemporary themes through experimental stagecraft, reflecting a broader shift in Indian theatre towards socially engaged narratives. Faculty mentors indicated that interdisciplinary learning — combining performance, visual design and digital elements — is now central to theatre education.Experts in urban development suggest that universities play a critical role in nurturing civic dialogue through the arts. By encouraging public engagement and critical storytelling, academic institutions contribute to a more participatory urban culture. Hyderabad’s expanding metro connectivity and improved public transport have also made it easier for audiences to access cultural venues, widening participation.

The Hyderabad University Bharat Rang Mahotsav appearance comes at a time when cities are competing to host large-scale cultural events to enhance tourism and city branding. However, sustainable cultural growth depends on affordable rehearsal spaces, equitable funding models and environmentally responsible event management. As Hyderabad continues to evolve, the integration of arts education into the broader urban narrative could prove decisive. If supported with policy continuity and infrastructure planning, university-driven performances at national festivals may strengthen the city’s creative economy while reinforcing its identity as a knowledge and culture hub.
