Pune Airport Go Around Raises Safety Focus

Nearly 160 passengers on a Pune-bound flight from Indore experienced an unexpected go-around at Pune Airport on Thursday evening after what flyers described as a forceful touchdown attempt, renewing attention on operational protocols at one of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing aviation hubs. The aircraft, operated by Air India Express, approached the runway shortly after 5pm before climbing again and circling for approximately 20–25 minutes. It subsequently landed safely on the second attempt. No injuries were reported.

Passengers on board indicated that the initial descent felt abrupt, followed by a sudden increase in engine thrust as the aircraft regained altitude. Aviation experts note that a go-around  a standard safety manoeuvre where pilots abort a landing and attempt another approach  is executed when parameters such as speed, alignment or runway conditions are not within acceptable limits. While the airline had not issued an official statement at the time of publication, civil aviation analysts emphasise that go-arounds are precautionary decisions intended to prioritise safety. Factors ranging from unstable approaches to crosswinds or runway assessments can prompt the procedure.

Pune Airport has witnessed steady growth in passenger volumes over the past decade, serving as a gateway for the city’s technology, manufacturing and education sectors. As traffic increases, maintaining clear communication with passengers during irregular events becomes integral to building trust in the aviation ecosystem. Some flyers reported limited in-flight updates during the holding pattern before the second landing. Industry observers say that transparent communication during such events, even when safety is not compromised, can reduce passenger anxiety and reinforce confidence in standard operating practices.

The episode follows previous instances in which flights approaching Pune aborted landings due to weather variations or runway safety considerations. Aviation regulators require strict adherence to approach stabilisation criteria, especially at airports where runway length, surrounding terrain and weather variability can present operational challenges. From an urban development standpoint, Pune’s growing reliance on air connectivity reflects its emergence as a regional economic anchor. Reliable and safe aviation operations are critical to sustaining investor confidence, supporting tourism and enabling business travel.

As the city plans for expanded airport infrastructure and improved multimodal links, incident management protocols and crew training remain central to resilience.
Authorities are expected to review flight data as part of routine post-event procedures. For passengers, the safe outcome underscores the aviation sector’s layered safety systems even as it highlights the importance of communication and preparedness in an increasingly busy airspace.
