The coastal municipality of Maradu has presented a ₹111.27 crore budget for 2026-27, outlining a development agenda centred on infrastructure upgrades, tourism activation and digital governance. With a projected surplus of ₹9.42 crore, civic officials say the spending plan aims to balance fiscal discipline with targeted capital investments in public spaces and mobility.
The budget, tabled before the municipal council earlier this week, estimates expenditure at ₹101.84 crore for the financial year. A senior municipal official indicated that the surplus projection reflects improved revenue mobilisation and tighter expenditure monitoring compared to previous cycles.In a first for the urban local body, the entire budgeting exercise was executed through the State’s K-Smart digital governance platform. Administrators noted that end-to-end digitisation of accounts and approvals is expected to enhance transparency, reduce procedural delays and enable real-time tracking of civic works. Urban finance experts argue that such systems can improve creditworthiness and long-term fiscal planning for mid-sized municipalities.
A significant portion of allocations has been directed towards infrastructure and public realm improvements. In Valanthakkad, a waterfront locality with growing tourism potential, funds have been earmarked for an open-air stage, food court facilities, decorative lighting and renovation of the existing boat jetty. Planners suggest that structured investment in waterfront amenities can diversify local revenue streams if integrated with environmental safeguards and waste-management systems.Lighting and mobility enhancements also feature prominently. The municipality plans to install LED lighting along the Nettoor parallel bridge and the Nettoor railway overbridge to improve road safety and energy efficiency. Energy auditors note that transitioning to LED fixtures can lower electricity consumption and maintenance costs, contributing to climate-responsive urban management.
