Hyderabad Nampally station redevelopment adds metro skywalk

Hyderabad’s historic Nampally Station redevelopment is entering a new phase with the construction of an elevated pedestrian corridor that will directly connect the railway terminal with the nearby metro station. The project, valued at over ₹327 crore, is part of a broader effort to modernise transport infrastructure while improving passenger movement across one of the city’s busiest transit nodes.

The proposed skywalk, stretching approximately 200 metres, will link the station concourse to the metro network along the adjacent arterial road. Designed with escalators and travelators, the structure aims to reduce interchange time for commuters switching between suburban and metro rail services.Transport planners say the Nampally Station redevelopment reflects a growing focus on integrating different modes of urban mobility in Indian cities. By connecting railways with metro systems through pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, authorities hope to encourage greater use of public transport while reducing congestion on surrounding roads.Nampally station currently handles about 60 train services daily and records an average footfall of nearly 28,000 passengers. To manage this volume more efficiently, the redevelopment blueprint includes several design interventions intended to streamline passenger flow inside the terminal.

Among the key upgrades are multiple lifts and escalators that will connect platforms to a central air concourse. The modernised layout will also separate arrival and departure routes, a strategy commonly adopted in airport-style station designs to minimise crowding and improve circulation during peak travel periods.Passenger amenities are also being expanded. Retail kiosks, food outlets and basic facilities such as restrooms are planned within a designated commercial area inside the redeveloped complex. Underground parking infrastructure is being incorporated to accommodate private vehicles and support better traffic management around the station precinct.Urban mobility experts view such station upgrades as essential to building integrated transit systems in rapidly expanding metropolitan regions like Hyderabad. Rail terminals located within dense urban districts increasingly serve as multimodal hubs linking long-distance trains, suburban rail, metro networks and last-mile mobility options.

The Nampally project is part of a wider programme to upgrade railway infrastructure across Telangana. Modernisation initiatives are also underway at other major city terminals, while a new rail terminal developed on the eastern edge of Hyderabad has been introduced to distribute passenger traffic more evenly across the network.Railway officials say investments in new lines, electrification and safety systems have expanded significantly across the region during the past decade. Advanced train protection technologies are also being deployed across hundreds of route kilometres to enhance operational safety. For Hyderabad’s growing population of daily commuters, the Nampally Station redevelopment represents more than a cosmetic station upgrade. By linking key transport systems and improving passenger infrastructure, the project signals a shift towards more integrated and commuter-friendly urban mobility planning. As redevelopment progresses, the long-term challenge will be ensuring that surrounding neighbourhoods evolve with adequate pedestrian infrastructure, public transport access and traffic management to support the upgraded transit hub.
