Telangana Issues Heatwave Advisory Ahead Rising Temperatures

The Telangana Health Department has issued a state-wide advisory as meteorological forecasts indicate a gradual rise in temperatures over the next three days. Authorities are urging citizens to adopt precautionary measures to mitigate the risks of heat-related illnesses amid the early onset of summer conditions. The advisory comes as maximum temperatures are expected to reach levels that can pose significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

Health officials recommend that residents maintain adequate hydration by drinking water regularly, even in the absence of thirst, and consuming oral rehydration solutions (ORS) or homemade beverages such as lemon water, buttermilk, and fruit juices. Seasonal fruits and vegetables with high water content, including watermelon, muskmelon, oranges, grapes, pineapples, and cucumbers, are also advised as part of a preventive dietary approach.Protective measures against direct sunlight have been emphasised. Citizens are advised to wear light-coloured, loose-fitting cotton garments and cover their heads using umbrellas, hats, caps, or traditional headgear. Outdoor activities should be restricted to cooler parts of the day, particularly mornings and evenings, while midday hours between 12 noon and 3 pm should be avoided. Ensuring ventilation in living and cooking spaces is also recommended to reduce indoor heat stress. The advisory outlines clear warning signs for heat-related illness, including dizziness, nausea, headache, rapid heartbeat, muscle cramps, hot or dry skin, and high body temperature. Severe symptoms such as confusion, seizures, and disorientation are flagged as medical emergencies requiring immediate attention. Public health facilities have been prepared to respond, with special beds, intravenous fluids, ORS sachets, and essential medicines made available. Auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs), Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), and anganwadi workers have been mobilised to provide on-ground assistance in case of heat emergencies.

Experts note that heatwaves exacerbate the health risks posed by climate variability and urban heat islands, particularly in densely populated urban centres like Hyderabad. Increasing ambient temperatures can intensify cardiovascular and respiratory stress, making early preventive action crucial. Urban planners and municipal authorities have been urged to integrate climate-resilient practices, such as expanding green cover, improving public water access, and enhancing building ventilation standards, to reduce the long-term impact of extreme heat. The Telangana Health Department’s proactive advisory highlights the intersection of climate change, urban living, and public health, stressing the importance of both individual precaution and systemic preparedness. Citizens are encouraged to follow recommended guidelines to protect themselves and vulnerable community members while authorities monitor weather patterns and readiness measures over the coming days.
