Mumbai Faces Water Cuts Amid Lake Shortage

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 5% water cut for the city, effective from Thursday, 30th May, due to critically low water levels in the city’s lakes. The cut will be intensified to 10% from 5th June if the situation does not improve.

This decision comes after the state government permitted the BMC to utilise reserve water stock to manage the crisis. As of Thursday, the total water stock in the city’s lakes was 1.21 lakh million litres, equating to only 8.39% of the required stock. This is a significant decrease from the same period last year, which saw water levels at 1.88 lakh million litres, or 13%, and even more drastic compared to 2022, when the water stock was 2.63 lakh million litres, or 18.21%.

In response to the dwindling water levels, the BMC has urged residents to adopt water conservation measures and use water judiciously. The civic body emphasised that the water cuts will remain in place until the city receives a satisfactory amount of rainfall and the water stock in the lakes improves to sustainable levels.

The BMC’s appeal for water conservation highlights the severity of the situation and the need for collective effort to mitigate the impact of the water shortage. The civic body is taking proactive steps to manage the limited water resources, and it is crucial for citizens to support these efforts by reducing water usage.
