Heatwave Strains Delhi’s Power Grid as Demand Nears 9,000MW

As Delhi swelters under an intense heatwave, the city’s power grid faces unprecedented challenges. With temperatures soaring above 52°C in some areas, the demand for electricity has surged to record highs, reaching 8,302MW on Wednesday.

In response to the escalating power demand, Delhi Power Minister has directed power companies to brace for a potential demand of 9,000MW. The government’s proactive stance aims to ensure uninterrupted power supply amidst the scorching heat. Thursday marked the 13th consecutive day of peak power demand surpassing 7,000MW, reflecting the sustained strain on the city’s energy infrastructure. While officials express confidence in the network’s resilience, concerns linger over its ability to handle further spikes in demand.

Despite recording a peak demand of 8,091MW on Thursday, down from the previous day’s high, the city remains on high alert. The government emphasizes the importance of preparedness in managing energy needs during extreme weather conditions. As Delhi residents grapple with soaring temperatures, the government’s efforts to mitigate the impact of the heatwave on daily life underscore the critical role of infrastructure resilience in ensuring the city’s energy security
