Stray Cattle Cause Traffic Havoc in Santa Cruz Goa

In a concerted effort to mitigate the recurring problem of stray cattle disrupting traffic in Santa Cruz, local villagers have proactively begun relocating the roaming animals away from the roads.

This temporary measure aims to alleviate immediate concerns, but residents are now urging the local panchayat to collaborate on devising permanent solutions to this ongoing issue. “With the onset of the rainy season, the fields in our village become waterlogged, forcing cattle to move onto the roads in search of dry ground,” explained a concerned villager. “This situation poses a significant nuisance for motorists, heightening the risk of accidents and impeding the smooth flow of traffic.”

Previously, the panchayat had implemented measures to impound the stray cattle, but their efforts met resistance from cow vigilantes, complicating the resolution process. In light of this, the panchayat explored alternative strategies and entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a gaushala in Mayem in May. According to the MoU, the gaushala agreed to assist the panchayat in impounding the stray animals, providing a more structured approach to addressing the issue. However, despite this partnership, the execution of the plans has been hampered by bureaucratic obstacles, particularly in accessing government funds designated for such assistance.

The villagers’ proactive stance reflects a broader concern for public safety and traffic efficiency. They emphasize the need for a coordinated effort between the panchayat and relevant stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions. The ongoing problem underscores the complexities of managing stray cattle in rural areas, where traditional practices and modern infrastructure often clash.
