Amritsar Smart Waste Monitoring Reaches 1.5 Lakh Homes

Amritsar has begun scaling up a technology-driven sanitation initiative aimed at improving the reliability of door-to-door waste collection across the city. Civic authorities have already tagged around 1.5 lakh households with digital identification markers as part of a new QR code waste monitoring system designed to track garbage lifting in real time.

The programme is being rolled out across residential and commercial establishments to strengthen oversight of municipal waste services and ensure that sanitation teams collect waste regularly from every neighbourhood. City officials say the system forms part of a broader effort to modernise urban waste management and improve accountability in municipal service delivery.Under the initiative, QR codes are affixed to the exterior walls of houses and commercial properties. When sanitation workers collect garbage from a property, they scan the code using a mobile device. The scan records the service in a digital system, creating a verifiable log of whether waste was collected from that location.

Residents also become part of the verification process. Once the scan is completed, a message is sent to the registered mobile number associated with the property asking occupants to confirm whether the garbage was collected. If residents report that waste was not picked up, the system flags the issue, enabling the civic administration to intervene quickly.Municipal officials say the QR code waste monitoring approach is intended to address long-standing challenges in ensuring consistent door-to-door collection. With a digital trail generated each time sanitation staff scan a household code, the city can track service coverage, evaluate contractor performance and respond to complaints more efficiently.

The tagging exercise currently covers about 1.5 lakh premises out of an estimated four lakh residential and commercial establishments across Amritsar. Authorities plan to gradually extend the system to the remaining properties so that waste collection services can be digitally monitored across the entire urban area.Urban sanitation experts say such digital monitoring tools are increasingly being adopted by cities trying to manage rising volumes of municipal waste. As urban populations grow, traditional manual tracking of waste collection often leads to gaps in service delivery and weak accountability.

Smart monitoring systems allow municipalities to create a data-driven record of waste collection routes and frequency. This can help planners optimise fleet deployment, reduce missed pickups and identify neighbourhoods where waste services require additional attention.The Amritsar initiative also reflects a wider shift toward technology-enabled governance in Indian cities. Municipal bodies are gradually integrating digital platforms into core civic functions such as waste management, water supply monitoring and property tax administration.However, officials acknowledge that technology alone cannot resolve the city’s waste challenges. Public participation remains essential, particularly in discouraging littering and open dumping of garbage in public spaces.

As the QR code waste monitoring network expands across Amritsar, city authorities hope the system will not only improve sanitation services but also build a more transparent relationship between residents and municipal service providers — an increasingly important component of sustainable urban management.
