Thane Plans Underground Road To Ease Ghodbunder Traffic

A major transport intervention is being planned along one of the most congested corridors in Thane after the state government cleared financial support for a proposed underground roadway designed to reduce chronic traffic bottlenecks. The Ghodbunder Road tunnel project is expected to create a new high-capacity traffic link beneath the busy arterial route, offering an alternative passage for vehicles moving across the rapidly expanding northern suburbs of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The proposed infrastructure will involve a roughly six-kilometre underground corridor connecting the Gaimukh area with the Fountain Hotel junction along Ghodbunder Road. Urban transport authorities say the alignment has been chosen to bypass heavily congested surface intersections while preserving the ecological landscape and urban settlements surrounding the corridor. Officials from the Government of Maharashtra confirmed that the project has received financial backing through allocations in the latest state budget, a move that could accelerate detailed planning and technical approvals. Transport planners had been evaluating several alternatives for easing traffic pressure on Ghodbunder Road, which currently carries a large share of intercity and suburban traffic linking Thane with northern coastal towns.

The Ghodbunder Road tunnel project is intended to support smoother movement of vehicles travelling between Thane and rapidly growing residential belts such as Vasai, Virar, Mira Road and Bhayandar. These suburbs have seen substantial population growth over the past decade, driven by housing demand and improved regional connectivity. Transport experts say Ghodbunder Road has evolved from a peripheral connector into a critical metropolitan mobility corridor. The route links the eastern and western sides of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region while also serving as a gateway to industrial zones, residential developments, and logistics networks. However, the combination of increasing vehicle numbers, limited road widening possibilities, and environmental sensitivities around nearby forest areas has made congestion management particularly challenging.

By shifting a portion of through-traffic underground, planners expect the Ghodbunder Road tunnel project to significantly reduce surface congestion and improve travel time reliability. Underground tunnels are increasingly being explored in large urban regions where expanding existing roads would require large-scale land acquisition or environmental clearance. Urban infrastructure analysts note that such projects can also influence real estate development patterns. Improved travel times between Thane and northern suburbs could further accelerate housing demand in peripheral locations, where relatively affordable residential projects are already attracting homebuyers seeking connectivity to Mumbai’s economic centres.

At the same time, experts emphasise that long-term traffic relief will depend on integrated mobility planning that combines road infrastructure with public transport expansion across the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region. For now, the budgetary backing marks an important milestone for the proposal. If planning approvals and environmental assessments progress smoothly, the Ghodbunder Road tunnel project could emerge as one of the region’s most significant urban transport investments in the coming years.
