Thane Announces Night Closures On Kalyan Shil Road Until March 31

Commuters travelling between key eastern suburbs of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region are set to face temporary traffic adjustments after authorities introduced night-time restrictions along a crucial corridor linking Thane and Kalyan. The Kalyan Shil Road traffic restrictions have been introduced to facilitate construction activity for a new metro rail line expected to improve regional connectivity.

Officials from the local traffic department confirmed that certain sections of Kalyan Shil Road will remain closed to vehicular movement during night hours until the end of March. The temporary closure will allow engineering teams to carry out infrastructure work related to Mumbai Metro Line 12, a planned rapid transit corridor designed to strengthen east–west mobility in the fast-growing metropolitan belt. According to transport authorities, the decision to implement Kalyan Shil Road traffic restrictions was taken after assessing construction requirements and the need to minimise disruption to daytime commuters. Night-time road closures allow contractors to conduct large-scale work such as foundation drilling, structural installations, and equipment movement in safer conditions while avoiding peak-hour congestion.

Traffic diversions have been introduced at several intersections along the corridor to guide motorists towards alternate routes. Key diversion points include junctions in Sonarpada, Vikramnagar and Manpada areas, where signboards and personnel have been deployed to assist drivers navigating the changes. Urban mobility experts note that construction-related traffic management has become increasingly common across expanding metro networks in India’s large cities. Major infrastructure projects often require temporary adjustments to road access in order to accommodate heavy machinery, construction materials, and safety zones.

For rapidly developing suburbs around Thane and Kalyan, the metro expansion is expected to play a crucial role in improving mobility patterns. The upcoming line will link growing residential clusters with employment hubs and industrial corridors across the eastern part of the metropolitan region. Transport planners believe the metro corridor will eventually reduce pressure on road-based commuting, which currently dominates travel between these suburbs. Once operational, the line is expected to offer a faster and more predictable alternative to private vehicles and shared transport services.

In the short term, however, Kalyan Shil Road traffic restrictions may require commuters to adjust travel schedules and routes during late evening hours. Authorities have advised motorists to follow diversion signs and plan journeys accordingly to avoid delays. Urban infrastructure analysts say the temporary inconvenience reflects the broader challenge of building mass transit systems within already dense urban environments. Projects like Mumbai Metro Line 12 are viewed as critical to long-term sustainable mobility in the region, especially as housing growth continues to expand outward from the core city.

If construction progresses on schedule, the current restrictions are expected to be lifted by the end of March. Until then, traffic officials say continuous monitoring will ensure that diversion routes remain functional and commuter safety is maintained during ongoing metro construction activities.
