NHAI Plans U-Shaped Flyover for Kilambakkam to ease traffic

In an initiative aimed at alleviating traffic congestion outside the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT) in Kilambakkam, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is drafting a detailed project report for the construction of a U-shaped flyover. This infrastructure project is expected to significantly ease the movement of both bus passengers and motorists on the adjoining National Highway.

The proposed flyover will address the persistent traffic bottlenecks at the Ayanancheri junction by providing a streamlined route for Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses exiting KCBT towards Chennai via GST Road, as highlighted by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). According to a CMDA statement, construction of the flyover is set to commence within the year. Meanwhile, as an interim measure, MTC buses will be permitted to cross GST Road, with measures in place to ensure pedestrian safety. This temporary solution will be implemented post the lifting of the election model code of conduct.

In preparation, the planning authority has initiated the installation of reflectors and road markings to facilitate pedestrian movement. Currently, KCBT operates approximately 1,100 government buses, 550 omnibuses, and 600 MTC buses daily, with weekend footfall ranging from 70,000 to 80,000 passengers. The construction of the U-shaped flyover is poised to significantly enhance traffic flow and commuter safety, marking a pivotal improvement in the region’s transportation infrastructure.

The NHAI’s commitment to addressing these issues reflects a broader strategy of infrastructure enhancement and urban development, positioning Kilambakkam as a more efficient and commuter-friendly hub shortly.
