Maharashtra Reviews Road Connectivity to Key Hill Tourism Corridors

The Maharashtra government has begun a fresh review of several strategic highway and bypass projects aimed at strengthening tourism access in the Western Ghats and easing traffic pressure across parts of the Nashik region. The assessment, conducted through high-level meetings in Mumbai, focused on accelerating infrastructure upgrades that connect hill destinations such as Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani while also improving regional highway movement around Yeola and Manmad.

Officials overseeing public works said the discussions examined the progress of road widening, safety improvements and alignment upgrades along routes that serve some of the state’s most visited tourism zones. Improved road design is considered essential for sustaining visitor flows while reducing congestion and travel risk across steep ghat sections. One of the projects under review is the Mahabaleshwar tourist road network linking Panchgani, Wai and Poladpur. These routes form the main access corridors to the Western Ghats hill station belt, which attracts large numbers of domestic travellers throughout the year and a growing share of international tourists.

Transport planners say the terrain around Mahabaleshwar poses unique engineering challenges. The Mahabaleshwar tourist road passes through narrow hill stretches and sharp turning sections that can slow traffic and increase accident risks, particularly during the monsoon season when visibility drops and landslides become more common. According to officials familiar with the review, the government has asked engineering teams to prioritise road widening in constrained segments while strengthening safety measures such as guardrails, signage and improved curve alignment. Upgrading directional information and road markings was also highlighted as a key intervention to assist drivers navigating the steep ghat terrain.

Beyond tourism connectivity, the state is also examining the progress of regional highway works in northern Maharashtra. Projects under evaluation include the Kopargaon–Yeola–Manmad highway and the Yeola bypass corridor. These routes play an important role in linking agricultural markets, logistics routes and regional towns across the Nashik division. Urban infrastructure specialists say bypass projects can significantly reduce congestion within smaller towns that experience heavy through traffic. By diverting long-distance vehicles away from dense local streets, bypasses can improve safety for pedestrians and reduce air pollution in populated areas.

Improving these regional corridors is also linked to broader economic goals. Faster and more reliable road access can support tourism-dependent livelihoods in hill destinations while strengthening logistics networks connecting rural production zones with larger markets. Infrastructure experts note that hill road upgrades must balance development needs with ecological sensitivity, particularly in the Western Ghats — a biodiversity hotspot and climate-sensitive landscape. Design interventions such as slope stabilisation, drainage management and controlled construction practices are increasingly being recommended to reduce environmental impact.

For state authorities, the current review marks an effort to ensure that these projects move forward with both safety and long-term sustainability in mind. As travel demand continues to grow across Maharashtra’s tourism circuits and regional trade routes, resilient road infrastructure is expected to play a critical role in maintaining connectivity while protecting fragile mountain environments.
