Sonepur International Airport Proposal Signals Aviation Shift

Patna: Bihar is advancing plans for a large greenfield aviation hub near Patna, with a proposed airport in Sonpur expected to reshape the region’s air connectivity and logistics capacity.

Spread across roughly 4,228 acres in Saran district, the project is designed to support wide-body aircraft and long-haul operations, potentially positioning north Bihar as a significant aviation gateway in eastern India. The proposed Sonpur airport project will be located in the Dariyapur Chawar area between Hajipur and Dumaria, about 15 kilometres from Patna. The site has been selected to provide easier access to both sides of the Ganga while creating space for large-scale aviation infrastructure that cannot be accommodated within the capital’s current airport footprint. Plans for the facility include a runway stretching approximately 4.2 kilometres, long enough to handle some of the world’s largest passenger aircraft, including the Airbus A380.

Such infrastructure would mark a significant upgrade from existing airports in the state, where runway length and land constraints limit operations to smaller aircraft. Officials involved in the planning process say the new airport is intended to address long-standing capacity challenges at the capital’s existing aviation facility, Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport, which operates within a dense urban area and faces restrictions on expansion. A larger airport outside the city could allow higher passenger throughput, cargo operations and international connectivity. The Sonpur airport project has received cabinet approval at the state level, with approximately ₹1,302 crore allocated for land acquisition. Authorities have also received preliminary clearances from national aviation agencies, while detailed planning and environmental assessments continue before construction begins.

If completed according to the current timeline, the airport could be operational by around 2030. The development would rank among the largest airport projects in India by land area and is expected to include passenger terminals, cargo handling facilities and associated infrastructure such as road links and service zones. Urban infrastructure analysts say the project reflects a broader shift in India’s aviation strategy, where secondary metropolitan regions are investing in large-scale airports to support economic growth, logistics networks and tourism. Similar greenfield aviation hubs are under development in other regions to ease congestion at existing airports and create new regional air corridors.

For Bihar, a major airport north of the Ganga could unlock economic potential across districts such as Saran, Vaishali and Muzaffarpur by improving travel times to national and international markets. Faster air connectivity may also support emerging sectors including agro-exports, medical travel and knowledge-based industries. However, the project also raises planning challenges. The proposed site currently includes fertile agricultural land, meaning land acquisition, rehabilitation and environmental management will be key considerations during implementation.

If executed successfully, the Sonpur airport project could become a defining infrastructure investment for Bihar’s next phase of urban and economic growth. Beyond improving connectivity, the airport may catalyse new logistics hubs, hospitality developments and regional transport links that reshape the metropolitan geography around Patna.
