Railway Upgrades Thane Expands, CSMT Lengthens

The Mumbai Central Railway (CR) has completed crucial upgrades at Thane and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) stations, aimed at improving commuter experience and operational efficiency.

The upgrade, which involved extensive platform modifications, was executed over a meticulously planned rail block period during the weekend. At Thane station, platforms 5 and 6, which accommodate over 300 suburban and long-distance trains daily, were widened by 2 to 3 meters, resulting in a 30% increase in platform space. A railway official highlighted that this expansion will facilitate the installation of more escalators and the broadening of existing foot over-bridge stairways, thereby enhancing passenger dispersal capabilities. The 63-hour rail block commenced on Friday and concluded successfully at 12:30 PM on Sunday, three hours ahead of the scheduled completion time.

Concurrently, significant developments were undertaken at CSMT, where platforms 10 and 11 were extended by 385 meters, bringing their total length to 690 meters. This extension, accomplished during a 36-hour rail block, enables the platforms to accommodate 24-coach trains. Previously, only platforms 14 to 18 could handle such capacity, often causing incoming mail and express trains to be halted outside CSMT. The extension will streamline train arrivals and reduce delays. The railway official also mentioned that the extension work for platforms 12 and 13 commenced on Sunday. The infrastructural work at CSMT also included the implementation of an intelligent and integrated electronic interlocking signalling system, which promises to enhance operational efficiency and safety.

The project at Thane saw the participation of over 400 labourers, 20 teams, and 10 contractors, who utilised 785 precast hollow blocks—the first instance of such blocks being used in platform construction. Meanwhile, the CSMT upgrades were carried out by 250 staffers working round the clock. The weekend upgrades, however, led to travel disruptions for commuters heading to South Mumbai, with sections between CSMT-Byculla and CSMT-Wadala being shut down, and the frequency of suburban and long-distance trains being affected due to the Thane rail blocks.

To mitigate commuter inconvenience, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking operated special bus services. BEST official reported that 132 trips were conducted for Wadala station, 125 trips for Byculla, and 92 trips for CSMT, with a total of 27.4 lakh commuters availing the bus services on Saturday. These infrastructural enhancements underscore the railway’s commitment to improving commuter experiences and operational efficiencies, paving the way for a more robust and reliable transportation network in Mumbai.
