A new Mohali sewer line project valued at ₹60.93 lakh has been launched in the Chandigarh Tricity region, highlighting growing pressure on basic urban infrastructure as residential expansion accelerates across the city’s rapidly developing sectors. The project is aimed at improving drainage and sanitation in areas where ageing pipelines and inadequate sewer capacity have increasingly affected residents and local businesses.

Mohali, officially known as Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, has evolved from a planned extension of Chandigarh into one of Punjab’s fastest-growing urban centres. Rapid real-estate development, expansion of IT parks, and population growth in new sectors have placed significant pressure on water supply, drainage, and sewerage networks that were originally designed for a much smaller city. Urban planners say the importance of the Mohali sewer line project lies less in the financial size of the investment and more in the type of infrastructure being prioritised. While new road projects and commercial development often dominate urban announcements, smaller investments in underground services such as sewer lines tend to have a more immediate impact on public health, property values, and environmental sustainability. Recent reports from the municipal corporation show that dozens of infrastructure works — including drainage improvements and road upgrades — have been approved across the city to address these gaps.

The focus on sewer infrastructure also reflects a broader trend in the Chandigarh–Mohali urban cluster. As new housing societies and commercial developments continue to expand towards the outskirts, pressure on older civic systems has intensified. In several areas, residents have raised concerns about waterlogging, sewage overflow, and inadequate drainage capacity during the monsoon season. Experts say that without continuous upgrades to underground infrastructure, rapid real-estate growth could create long-term environmental risks, including groundwater contamination and higher maintenance costs for civic bodies. From a development perspective, sewer projects of this scale often play a crucial role in enabling future urban expansion. Infrastructure planners note that improved sewer capacity allows municipalities to support higher-density housing while also reducing the risk of flooding and sanitation-related health problems. For cities in the Chandigarh Tricity region — where land demand continues to grow — such investments can influence how new residential corridors develop over the next few years.

The challenge, however, remains execution. Previous infrastructure initiatives in the city have highlighted the need for faster implementation and better coordination between municipal bodies and development authorities. If completed on schedule, the new Mohali sewer line project could provide immediate relief to residents while also supporting more sustainable urban growth in one of northern India’s fastest-expanding urban clusters.
