NMIA Operationalization to Ease CSMIA’s Aviation Burden

In a significant development for Mumbai’s aviation sector, Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holding Ltd, revealed plans to alleviate congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) by relocating certain operations to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). At a recent CAPA event in New Delhi, Bansal outlined strategies to optimize terminal and airside capacities at both airports.

With the operationalization of NMIA slated for March 2025, Bansal underscored the potential for significant relief at CSMIA, particularly in terms of airside infrastructure utilization. By relocating hangars, general aviation facilities, and cargo operations to NMIA, CSMIA aims to create additional capacity to enhance operational efficiency.

The initiative aligns with Adani Group’s broader vision for the aviation sector, marked by a planned investment of $15 billion over the next 25 years. With a portfolio encompassing Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Mangaluru, Jaipur, Guwahati, and Thiruvananthapuram airports, the group is poised to transform airport infrastructure across India. By expanding capacities and modernizing terminals, Adani aims to triple passenger throughput to up to 30 crore annually by 2040.

Moreover, Bansal emphasized the group’s commitment to innovation and collaboration within the aviation industry. By advocating for open-source and interoperable passenger processing systems, Adani seeks to promote technological advancement and foster competition among software developers. Collaborations with Indian software companies aim to develop scalable solutions that enhance passenger experience and streamline airport operations.

As CSMIA prepares for the phased transition of operations to NMIA, stakeholders anticipate improved efficiency, reduced congestion, and enhanced passenger services across Mumbai’s airport network. The strategic realignment of aviation infrastructure underscores Adani Group’s commitment to shaping India’s aviation landscape and fostering sustainable growth in the sector.
