LMC’s Silt Management Fails, Drains Clogged Again After Rainstorm

In a setback to Lucknow’s drainage management efforts, the recent rainstorm has exposed flaws in the Lucknow Municipal Corporation’s (LMC) silt disposal strategy, leading to renewed concerns over clogged drains across the city. Despite recent drainage clearance initiatives, residents in various localities have reported a resurgence of drainage issues as the downpour washed silt back into the drains, exacerbating the risk of waterlogging.

Following a storm on Thursday morning, residents from multiple localities, including Balaganj, Thakurganj, Chowk, New Hyderabad, and Alambagh, voiced grievances over clogged drains and the accumulation of silt left by LMC’s previous clearance operations. Despite LMC’s efforts to clear drains, the residual silt left unattended on roadsides served as fodder for the rain, leading to a recurrence of drainage blockages.

A survey conducted by a leading media house corroborated residents’ claims, highlighting the failure of LMC’s silt disposal methods. The untimely disposal of silt allowed rainwater to carry it back into drains, nullifying previous cleaning efforts aimed at mitigating waterlogging during the monsoon season.

Residents expressed frustration over the inconvenience caused by the clogged drains, citing concerns over health hazards posed by stagnant water and foul odors emanating from the accumulated silt. The lack of prompt action by LMC to address the issue has exacerbated residents’ plight, raising questions about the efficacy of the municipality’s drainage maintenance strategies.

In response to the escalating concerns, LMC officials assured swift action to rectify the situation, pledging to address areas where silt and garbage remain uncleared. Contractors responsible for silt disposal will be held accountable for any lapses in the drainage maintenance process, underscoring the municipality’s commitment to resolving the ongoing drainage challenges faced by Lucknow residents.
