PMC and Defence Collaborate on Waterlogging Solutions

In a concerted effort to address the persistent waterlogging issues in Pune’s Kalas and Dhanori areas, officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) are set to meet with defence authorities to discuss effective stormwater management solutions. The discussion is particularly focused on the defence shooting range, which has been identified as a significant contributor to the waterlogging problems in these areas.

On June 4, Kalas and Dhanori experienced a deluge, recording 120 mm of rainfall in a short span. The heavy rain resulted in severe flooding of numerous homes and commercial establishments. In response to this crisis, Civic Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale, accompanied by municipal officers, visited the affected areas on Friday. Commissioner Bhosale highlighted that the intense rainfall in a brief period had led to widespread waterlogging at several locations. Commissioner Bhosale pointed out that a substantial volume of water flowed from a nearby Army establishment into the Laxmi Rark area in Dhanori, exacerbating the waterlogging situation. In light of this, he has directed local authorities to engage with defence officers to implement the necessary stormwater management measures. This collaboration aims to mitigate the impact of future heavy rains and prevent similar incidents.

Additionally, the commissioner instructed municipal officers to undertake another round of cleaning for the stormwater lines in the affected areas. He emphasised the importance of installing manhole covers to facilitate the rapid discharge of rainwater, thereby reducing the risk of flooding.

The PMC’s initiative to collaborate with defence authorities underscores the importance of a coordinated approach in tackling urban infrastructure challenges.
