Defective Number Plate Prosecutions Surge 286% in Delhi

Delhi has witnessed a remarkable 286% surge in prosecutions for vehicles with defective number plates compared to the previous year, with Mayur Vihar emerging as a hotspot for such violations, closely followed by Nand Nagri and Khajuri Khas. Data spanning from January 1 to May 31 reveals a substantial increase in the number of violators booked for defective number plates, reaching a staggering count of 16,859, compared to 4,363 in 2023. A senior traffic officer attributed this surge to the intensified crackdown by the Delhi Traffic Police, aimed at bolstering road safety and ensuring adherence to regulatory standards.

The initiative underscores the recognition of defective number plates as a significant contributor to traffic violations and security risks, encompassing issues such as illegibility, improper formatting, and non-compliance with prescribed standards. To address these concerns, Delhi Traffic Police have bolstered their enforcement efforts by deploying additional personnel and resources, establishing special drives and checkpoints across strategic locations.

A comprehensive analysis of the top ten traffic circles with the highest number of challans issued for defective number plates in 2024 has provided valuable insights into areas with prevalent violations. By identifying these regions, authorities can tailor enforcement strategies to target specific areas and enhance compliance effectively. The top-ranking circles for defective number plate violations include Mayur Vihar, Nand Nagri, Khajuri Khas, Samaypur Badli, Civil Lines, Bhajanpura, Ashok Vihar, Gandhi Nagar, Sadar Bazar, and Narela. Additionally, efforts to raise awareness about the importance of proper number plates have been intensified through social media campaigns and collaboration with automobile associations, aiming to educate vehicle owners on legal requirements and penalties for non-compliance.

The significant increase in prosecutions reflects a proactive approach by Delhi Traffic Police towards promoting road safety and enforcing regulatory standards, ultimately contributing to enhanced compliance and safer roadways for all commuters.
