Delhi Electric Vehicle Adoption Rises Amid Fuel Growth

Electric mobility in the national capital is gaining pace, with new data showing a sharp rise in Delhi electric vehicle adoption during the past financial year. Registrations of battery-powered vehicles grew by nearly 29 percent in 2025–26, reflecting stronger consumer interest and policy incentives aimed at reducing transport emissions in one of the world’s most polluted urban regions. Despite the growth in electric mobility, conventional fuel vehicles continue to dominate the city’s overall vehicle market. Data compiled from the national vehicle registration platform indicates that petrol-powered vehicles remain the largest category of new registrations, highlighting the scale of the transition still required to shift Delhi’s transport ecosystem toward cleaner alternatives.

According to the analysis, registrations of electric vehicles increased from around 83,500 units in 2024–25 to more than 107,000 vehicles in the following year. Hybrid electric vehicles also recorded modest growth over the same period. The rise is being linked to a combination of supportive state policies, improving charging infrastructure and rising public awareness about the environmental benefits of electric mobility. However, the broader vehicle mix still reflects strong demand for traditional fuel technologies. Petrol and petrol-ethanol vehicles accounted for the largest share of new registrations, increasing from roughly 530,000 vehicles to over 620,000 during the same period. The data suggests that while Delhi electric vehicle adoption is accelerating, the transition remains gradual as consumers weigh costs, infrastructure availability and driving needs. Cleaner fossil fuel alternatives have also gained ground in the capital. Registrations of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles increased significantly, reflecting the continued appeal of lower-emission fuels in the commercial and personal transport segments. By contrast, diesel vehicles saw a small decline in new registrations, continuing a longer-term downward trend influenced by stricter emission norms and regulatory restrictions in the city.

Another notable trend has been the rapid growth of hybrid vehicles that combine internal combustion engines with electric propulsion. Registrations in this category more than doubled during the year, suggesting that some buyers may be opting for hybrid technologies as an intermediate step while the charging ecosystem for fully electric vehicles expands. Urban mobility experts note that sustained progress in Delhi electric vehicle adoption will depend heavily on policy stability and infrastructure expansion. Charging networks, battery costs and consumer confidence remain key factors influencing purchasing decisions. Authorities have also introduced incentives such as tax benefits, purchase subsidies and scrappage policies aimed at accelerating the replacement of older polluting vehicles. The shift toward cleaner mobility has broader implications for urban planning and environmental health in the capital. Road transport is a major contributor to Delhi’s air pollution levels, and increasing the share of zero-emission vehicles is seen as a critical component of long-term climate and air-quality strategies.

While electric vehicles are steadily gaining market share, analysts say the pace of change will likely remain incremental as the city’s vehicle base continues to expand. The coming years will test whether policy support and infrastructure investments can convert rising interest in electric mobility into a structural transformation of Delhi’s transport landscape.
