Telangana Anticipates Fourth Year of Above-Normal Rainfall

Telangana is poised to continue its trend of receiving above-normal rainfall for the fourth consecutive year, as forecasted by weather experts. This consistent pattern, observed since 2020, underscores the state’s resilience to precipitation variability and its impact on agriculture, infrastructure, and water resources management.

Over the past three years, Telangana has consistently surpassed its average annual rainfall of 919 mm. In the most recent meteorological data, the state received 994.8 mm in 2023-24, slightly above its historical average. Notably, the preceding years saw substantial rainfall with 1,387.8 mm in 2022-23, 1,322.4 mm in 2020-21, and 1,180.5 mm in 2021-22, significantly bolstering the state’s water reserves.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the upcoming southwest monsoon is expected to be vigorous, driven by La Niña conditions anticipated to replace El Niño by July. La Niña typically enhances monsoon activity, resulting in above-average rainfall and cooler temperatures across the country. Approximately 80% of Telangana’s annual precipitation, which averages 738.6 mm, is attributed to the southwest monsoon. In the previous year, specific regions within Telangana, such as Mulugu, Jayashankar, and Adilabad, recorded notable rainfall surpluses ranging from 11% to 31% above their respective averages. Hyderabad and Medchal-Malkajgiri also experienced above-average rainfall, highlighting the widespread impact of favourable weather conditions.

Despite projections suggesting a less intense monsoon compared to previous exceptionally wet years, local meteorologists advise preparedness measures to mitigate potential challenges associated with heavy rainfall events. This proactive approach is crucial for sectors reliant on stable weather patterns, including agriculture, urban planning, and disaster management. As Telangana anticipates another year of significant rainfall, stakeholders are urged to leverage this forecasted abundance for sustainable development and resilience-building efforts across the state.
