Seminar in Kolkata Raises Awareness on Green Buildings

A seminar was recently conducted in Kolkata by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), in collaboration with Credai Bengal and the Rotary Club of Kolkata Inner City, with the aim of spreading awareness about the Green building movement. The event brought together government officials, industry experts, and building and construction industry stakeholders to discuss sustainable development and the benefits of Green buildings. State Housing Department Minister Aroop Biswas emphasised the critical nature of climate emergency and the need for urgent action in the sector. IGBC was established by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in 2001.

The event served as a platform for architects, engineers, and the public to learn about the advantages of Green buildings and sustainable development. By promoting environment-friendly practices, IGBC aims to drive the adoption of Green building principles in the construction industry.

Biswas acknowledged the exponential growth of Green buildings in recent years, primarily due to government support. He emphasised the critical nature of the climate emergency and called for urgent action to address it. He assured that the state government would continue to provide necessary support to the Green building movement. Debashis Sen, Chairman and Managing Director of Hidco, highlighted the various initiatives taken in New Town to promote sustainability. Sushil Mohta, Chairman of Merlin Group, underscored IGBC’s mission to create awareness about sustainable and green development.

With over 10.28 billion sq ft of registered Green building footprint, India stands as the world’s second-largest contributor to the Green building movement. This impressive figure showcases the country’s growing momentum and commitment towards sustainable development.
