BMC Completes Restoration of 1.1km Marine Drive Footpath

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced on Tuesday the successful restoration of the 1.1km footpath along Marine Drive, which had been temporarily utilized for Mumbai’s coastal road construction.

Extending from G D Somani Chowk to Savitribai Phule Girls Hostel in the south-to-north phase, this redevelopment initiative marks a significant milestone in the city’s infrastructure upgrade. As part of the coastal road project, the north-bound tunnel was inaugurated earlier in June, accompanied by the widening of the road along Marine Drive to 10.6 metres between the Princess Street flyover and Mafatlal Club signal. BMC officials highlighted that alongside these enhancements, provisions have been made for seating arrangements, maintaining the area’s aesthetic appeal and usability. “The restoration efforts include reinstating the footpath to its original functionality, ensuring pedestrian safety and convenience,” stated a BMC spokesperson. Ongoing planning for street lights is also underway to further enhance the accessibility and security of the area.

The additional service road adjacent to the Princess Street flyover now facilitates access to the northern tunnel, offering improved connectivity options for commuters. With the completion of this phase, BMC aims to bolster both the infrastructural capacity and the overall urban experience along Marine Drive. This development aligns with BMC’s commitment to upgrading Mumbai’s public spaces while advancing major infrastructure projects to meet growing urban demands effectively. The restored Marine Drive footpath is set to benefit pedestrians and commuters alike, fostering a safer and more accessible environment along this iconic stretch of Mumbai’s coastline.
