Hoax Bomb Threats Rattle Mumbai’s Aviation and Healthcare Sectors

Mumbai faced a significant security scare as hoax bomb threats targeted both the aviation industry and healthcare facilities across the city. The incident unfolded when IndiGo flight 6E 5149 from Chennai to Mumbai landed under full emergency protocols at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) following a bomb threat. Despite rigorous checks by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), authorities confirmed the threat was non-specific, ensuring the safety of all 196 passengers and seven crew members.

Simultaneously, 41 airports nationwide, including CSMIA, received identical bomb threat emails, leading to extensive anti-sabotage measures and disruptions to normal operations. Fortunately, investigations revealed all alerts to be false, attributed to an online group named “KNR”.

“This recent series of threats underscores the challenges faced by our security agencies in handling non-specific threats effectively,” commented a security expert familiar with aviation protocols. The frequency of such incidents has heightened concerns over the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to cyber threats. In a parallel development, approximately 60 hospitals across Mumbai were also targeted with similar hoax emails, claiming explosives were planted within their premises. Hospitals like Jaslok Hospital, SL Raheja Hospital, and KEM Hospital, among others, swiftly activated their security protocols in response. Police confirmed that thorough checks conducted after each alert yielded no evidence of any explosives.

“The emails, originating from a Virtual Private Network (VPN), were promptly reported to local authorities, showcasing the preparedness of healthcare facilities in handling such emergencies,” stated a police spokesperson. Despite the disruptive nature of these incidents, no casualties or actual threats were reported. This wave of hoax threats comes on the heels of similar incidents involving airlines earlier in June, including the diversion of an Akasa Air flight to Ahmedabad and a full emergency declared for a Vistara flight from Paris to Mumbai. Authorities continue to investigate the motives behind these threats while emphasizing the importance of vigilance and adherence to security protocols.
