Mumbai Braces for Heavy Rain, Gusty Winds

MUMBAI: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an increase in rainfall activity across Maharashtra over the next five days due to the strengthening of westerly winds. Thane and Raigad districts have been placed under an orange alert for Tuesday and Wednesday, signifying the anticipation of heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Residents of Mumbai can expect thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy rain, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph at isolated locations on Sunday. On Saturday, the city experienced overcast and humid conditions, with Colaba recording 2 mm of rainfall and Santacruz 9 mm by 8:30 am. Thane received 42 mm of rainfall by Saturday morning. The IMD has issued a red alert for extremely high rainfall in Sindhudurg, while Pune, Kolhapur, and Satara districts are under an orange alert for the coming week starting Tuesday. Weather officials predict Thane will experience heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy (115.6-204.4 mm) rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday. Raigad is expected to see heavy to very heavy rains from Monday through Wednesday.

Mumbai is under a yellow alert, indicating a need for caution as isolated areas are predicted to receive heavy rainfall from Monday to Wednesday. This increase in precipitation and wind activity is expected to cause significant disruptions, and residents are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts and take necessary precautions. As the region prepares for the adverse weather conditions, the IMD’s alerts serve as a critical reminder for residents and authorities to remain vigilant and responsive to any developments.
