Mumbai Grapples with Heavy Rainfall, Traffic Snarls Persist

Mumbai experienced a resurgence of intense rainfall on Thursday evening, causing widespread disruptions across the city. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), these showers are expected to intensify further as the southwest monsoon progresses.

Areas such as Marol, Lower Parel, Dadar, Bandra, Kurla, and others including suburbs like Vasai, Navi Mumbai, and Panvel witnessed persistent drizzles turning into heavy downpours. The sudden onset of rain led to severe traffic congestion, with commuters reporting significant delays. Journeys that typically take minutes extended to hours, with routes like CSMT to Parel taking over two hours, and BKC to Santacruz West stretching to two and a half hours.

In a span of 12 hours until 10 pm on Thursday, many parts of Mumbai recorded rainfall ranging between 40mm to 70mm. Areas like Dahisar, Borivali, Andheri West, Vile Parle, Santacruz, Kurla, and Colaba received the highest precipitation, impacting both road and rail transport severely.

IMD Mumbai attributed the heavy rainfall to strong westerly winds and a cyclonic circulation over Gujarat, enhancing precipitation levels. Despite the current downpour, forecasts suggest that June’s total rainfall may fall below normal levels.

Looking ahead, IMD officials have issued a yellow alert for Friday and Saturday, anticipating moderate rainfall with the possibility of heavier showers on Sunday. This advisory underscores the need for residents to remain cautious amid potential waterlogging and traffic disruptions.

Temperature-wise, Santacruz recorded a maximum of 31.6 degrees Celsius, while Colaba saw 31.4 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels ranging between 86-87%. The rainfall statistics from the onset of the monsoon season reveal a deficit in both Colaba and Santacruz, highlighting the varying impact across Mumbai’s geographical zones.

The city’s infrastructure and drainage systems will continue to be tested as monsoon conditions persist. Authorities are urged to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to mitigate the impact on public safety and urban mobility during this rainy season.
