Kolkata’s historic New Market and bustling Grand Arcade have witnessed a significant transformation following stringent regulatory measures imposed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The recent scene at New Market painted a stark contrast to its usual deserted state, with shoppers flocking back to its heritage lanes. The once congested streets, overrun by hawkers, suddenly appeared more spacious, offering a renewed ease of movement for pedestrians and motorists alike.

The shift comes in response to the CM’s directive to enforce strict boundaries for hawking activities. At Grand Arcade, adjacent to the Oberoi Grand Hotel, a delineated yellow line now confines hawkers to one-third of the pavement, following a High Court mandate. This move, intended to maintain order and prevent overcrowding, has been largely complied with after initial resistance from hawkers who had extended beyond permissible limits.

Local traders and shoppers alike expressed relief and appreciation for the newfound orderliness. Many remarked on the reminiscent atmosphere of decades past when New Market was more accessible before encroachment became rampant. The initiative has not only revitalized business within the market but also alleviated longstanding parking issues, allowing more visitors to access the area conveniently. Moreover, businesses at Grand Arcade reported a resurgence in footfall, attributing it to the CM’s resolute stance and the ensuing regulatory adjustments.
