Mangalore MCC Launches Plan to Plant 10,000 Saplings to Boost Green Initiative

Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has initiated a significant green project called ‘Hasire Usiru’ to enhance the city’s green cover. Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur announced this initiative at the Kudumal Ranga Rao Town Hall in Mangalore, coinciding with the birthday of environmentalist Salumarada Thimmakka.

Under the ‘Hasire Usiru’ drive, MCC plans to plant 10,000 saplings, including fruit-bearing varieties like mango and jackfruit. These saplings will be strategically planted near 19 overhead tanks and ground level service reservoirs developed as part of the Jalasiri scheme. Additional planting will occur near the sites of old overhead tanks, benefiting from existing compound walls that negate the need for separate fencing. Mayor Kannur emphasized the sustainability of the initiative, noting the introduction of a drip irrigation system to ensure adequate watering of the saplings. The MCC has invested ₹7.65 lakh to procure the saplings from the forest department, underscoring its commitment to environmental conservation and urban greenery enhancement. Addressing concerns about declining greenery in certain city wards, Mayor Kannur highlighted forthcoming plans for median beautification in collaboration with builders These initiatives will involve planting saplings along medians, with builders responsible for maintaining these areas, thereby creating a greener urban landscape.

The ‘Hasire Usiru’ drive is set to encompass all 60 wards of Mangalore, utilizing available government land for plantation activities. This comprehensive approach aims to not only reduce urban heat island effects but also enhance biodiversity and improve the overall well-being of residents. The initiative reflects MCC’s proactive stance towards environmental sustainability and community engagement, aligning with broader national and global efforts to combat climate change through localized green initiatives. As Mangalore progresses towards a greener future, ‘Hasire Usiru’ stands as a testament to effective civic leadership and environmental stewardship in urban development.
