Delhi Braces for Continued Heavy Rains, Civic Agencies Bolster Preparations

Delhi’s civic agencies are intensifying their preparedness measures following forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting heavy rainfall to persist over the next few days. This proactive stance comes in the wake of a deluge that paralyzed the national capital, causing significant disruption and casualties.

On Friday, Delhi experienced a record-breaking 228.1 mm of rainfall, marking the highest June rainfall since 1936 and leading to widespread flooding across various parts of the city. The Aam Aadmi Party government has announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of those who lost their lives due to drowning incidents during this torrential downpour.

In response to the forecasted heavy rains until Tuesday, civic agencies such as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) have deployed additional manpower and machinery. This includes mobile pumps, super suction machines, and earth movers strategically stationed across vulnerable areas identified through advanced monitoring systems like CCTV cameras.

“The MCD has mobilized 72 permanent pumping stations supplemented by 465 mobile and submersible pumps to swiftly address waterlogging issues,” affirmed a senior MCD official, emphasizing round-the-clock operational readiness.

Similarly, the NDMC has heightened its vigilance in Lutyens’ Delhi, deploying additional pumps and keeping essential staff on duty to ensure prompt response to any emerging waterlogging incidents. “Our central command centre is closely monitoring vulnerable areas via CCTV surveillance, enabling real-time interventions,” stated an NDMC official.

Meanwhile, the Public Works Department (PWD) has reported successful drainage of all waterlogged spots barring the Pragati Maidan Tunnel, underscoring ongoing efforts to maintain thoroughfare accessibility amidst the monsoon onslaught.

“As part of our comprehensive monsoon action plan, all necessary arrangements have been made to mitigate flood risks,” assured a PWD spokesperson, highlighting the collaborative efforts between agencies to uphold public safety and operational efficiency.

With Delhi’s infrastructure tested by unprecedented rainfall, authorities remain vigilant, committed to enhancing resilience against natural disasters and ensuring swift response capabilities to safeguard residents and critical urban functions.
