BMC's Drive Mumbai Cleans Up 538 Illegal Hawkers
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has undertaken a rigorous campaign to eradicate illegal street vending in Mumbai, removing a total of 538 unauthorized hawkers across various key locations in the city and its suburbs. This initiative, spanning from June 28 to 30, targeted bustling areas such as Dadar, Andheri, Borivali, and Kurla, aiming to reclaim public spaces and ensure smoother pedestrian movement.
In a concerted effort led by local wards, BMC officials focused on clearing pathways previously congested by unauthorized hawkers, notably near Dadar railway station where 220 hawkers were relocated. Additional actions included clearing 68 hawkers in the Juhu Link area, 35 from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to the High Court, and others along Mohammad Ali Road, Lokmanya Tilak Marg, Lalbaug, Andheri Railway Station, Mathuradas Marg, Borivali Railway Station, and Kurla Railway Station.
The operation also involved the seizure of equipment used for illegal vending, emphasizing BMC’s commitment to maintaining public health standards and orderly urban infrastructure. The initiative aims not only to curb unauthorized commerce but also to eliminate the risks associated with unregulated food sales in public spaces. BMC officials underscored the ongoing nature of the campaign, highlighting its strategic importance in enhancing civic amenities and ensuring compliance with regulatory norms. The corporation remains resolute in its efforts to sustain the cleanliness and accessibility of Mumbai’s streets, reinforcing the message that public spaces are meant for lawful and orderly use.
