CIDCO Fast-Tracks Airport Express Line Metro DPR

The highly anticipated metro connectivity between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is set to advance significantly. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has announced that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Airport Express Line Metro is being expedited and will be finalised shortly.

A senior CIDCO official revealed, “We are currently preparing the DPR for the Airport Express Line Metro and will have it ready soon. Once the DPR is prepared and approved, subsequent steps such as inviting tenders, finalising contractors, and commencing construction will follow.” Regarding the metro’s structure, the official indicated that it will be a combination of underground and elevated sections. “We are deliberating on the specifics while preparing the DPR and aim to finalise the route alignment soon,” the official added.

The proposed ₹15,000 crore metro line is expected to have a daily ridership of nine lakh passengers, connecting the existing and proposed airports. CIDCO is collaborating with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on this project. According to reports, the MMRDA, in partnership with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), will construct Metro Line 8 from CSMIA to Mankhurd, covering an 11.1 km stretch. CIDCO will extend the line from Mankhurd to the proposed NMIA.

The 35 km route between CSMIA and NMIA will feature eight metro stations, with trains operating at a frequency of 15 minutes. This metro line is anticipated to significantly enhance the connectivity and ease of travel between the two major airports. As per CIDCO’s official, the NMIA project is progressing well, with 75% of the work completed. The official reiterated that the airport is expected to commence operations by March 31, 2025. “The runway work is complete, the radar system is in place, and the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower is nearly finished. The terminal building is 60 to 70% ready. I am confident that the concessionaire will complete the NMIA project on schedule, ensuring the first flight takes off from the new airport by March 31, 2025,” the official stated.
