EM Bypass Bridge Gets Rs 18.3 Crore Boost
The state government has sanctioned Rs 18.3 crore to the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) for the construction of a new bridge over the intercepting canal near Tagore Park on the EM Bypass. This initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance vehicular movement on this critical arterial road.
The planned 45-meter long bridge will significantly widen the existing culvert on the Science City-bound side of the Bypass by an additional 24 meters, creating more space for vehicles. Once completed, the stretch will be 34 meters wide, with 10 meters dedicated to service lanes. KMDA officials have projected the completion of this project by the end of the year. KMDA representatives highlighted the project’s potential impact on traffic flow. “This expansion will facilitate smoother transit on the EM Bypass, a vital thoroughfare for Kolkata. The addition of service lanes will further improve traffic management and reduce congestion,” a KMDA official stated.
In addition to the bridge construction, KMDA is also exploring plans to convert abandoned culverts along the EM Bypass into pedestrian underpasses. This move aims to enhance pedestrian safety and mobility, further contributing to the overall improvement of the city’s infrastructure. The financial backing from the state government underscores the importance of this project in addressing the growing traffic demands in Kolkata. As the city continues to expand, such infrastructure developments are crucial for supporting sustainable urban growth and ensuring efficient transportation networks.
By improving one of Kolkata’s key routes, the new bridge will play a pivotal role in enhancing connectivity and reducing travel times for commuters. The KMDA’s proactive measures in planning and executing these infrastructure projects highlight their commitment to fostering a more accessible and well-connected urban environment.
