The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is nearing completion of its first-ever cactus garden project, slated to open to the public by September. Situated across 1.4 acres near Deshbandhu Apartments in IP Extension, east Delhi, this initiative is funded under the central government’s AMRUT scheme, aimed at enhancing urban amenities.
Highlighting the project’s unique features, an MCD official disclosed that it will showcase a diverse array of cacti, including 550 grafted ordinary helio cacti, 200 coloured grafted helio cacti, 20 ferlo cacti, and 50 melo cacti with caps. The development has been supported with a budget of Rs 50.5 lakh, facilitating the construction of a polyhouse equipped with advanced temperature and water control systems to ensure optimal conditions for the cacti’s growth. Beyond its botanical attractions, the garden will incorporate various landscaping themes featuring rocks, pebbles, and plant galleries of succulents thriving in arid environments. The park’s amenities will be enhanced with visitor-friendly facilities such as benches, a grass lawn, and a dedicated walkway amidst topiary plantations of trees and bushes.
The MCD official further underscored the corporation’s broader efforts in urban beautification and public recreation, citing ongoing developments including a senior citizens’ park near Law Apartment and a specialized disability park at Rathi Mill, both in east Delhi. The disability park, tailored with features catering specifically to individuals with disabilities, is set to commence operations by the end of July, offering inclusive recreational opportunities. This initiative aligns with MCD’s commitment to enhancing green spaces and recreational facilities across Delhi, fostering community engagement and environmental stewardship. By introducing thematic gardens and modern amenities, MCD aims to create sustainable, inclusive spaces that cater to diverse public needs and promote urban biodiversity.
