Met Predicts Rain Respite and Cooler Climes for Kolkata

Kolkata is poised to receive much-needed relief from the scorching heat as the Meteorological Department anticipates the arrival of rain showers in the city. Following a period of dry weather, the imminent thunderstorms are expected to bring temporary respite, effectively curbing further rises in temperature. Meteorologists predict a decrease of one notch in both maximum and minimum temperatures by Friday, signalling cooler days ahead.

According to the head of the weather section at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata, the city is likely to experience thunderstorms starting Thursday night, with denser cloud cover persisting through Friday. This weather pattern is forecasted to mitigate the recent heatwave, which saw temperatures surpassing 35 degrees Celsius, significantly above the seasonal norms. The recent dry spell has exacerbated Kolkata’s seasonal rain deficit, currently estimated at approximately 49%. Similarly, neighboring districts in South Bengal, including North 24 Parganas, Nadia, Birbhum, and Murshidabad, face a collective shortfall of 54%. However, meteorological authorities remain optimistic that July’s status as the monsoon’s peak month will help narrow these deficits substantially by month-end.

In addition to Kolkata, several southern districts of West Bengal are also expected to receive intermittent rain showers, providing relief to residents and farmers grappling with water scarcity amid the ongoing agricultural season. The anticipated rainfall not only promises to lower temperatures but also holds economic significance by potentially revitalizing agricultural activities and replenishing groundwater resources. It underscores the importance of timely monsoon rains in sustaining regional ecosystems and supporting livelihoods dependent on farming and allied industries. As Kolkata prepares for the anticipated weather change, authorities urge residents to remain vigilant during thunderstorms and heavy rain spells. The Met Department continues to monitor weather patterns closely, providing regular updates to ensure public safety and mitigate any potential disruptions caused by the impending weather conditions.
