Pune Airport’s New Terminal Launches Amid Enthusiasm and Operational Challenges

Pune’s airport witnessed a blend of excitement and initial operational challenges as its new terminal finally opened its doors to passengers on Sunday. The inaugural Air India flight bound for Delhi, slated to depart at 4 pm, faced an hour-long delay, causing confusion among passengers unsure of which terminal to use for check-in.

Despite the initial hiccups, passengers expressed optimism about the modern amenities offered at the new facility. One traveller recounted, “Initially, I was at the old terminal, confused about where to check in. Thankfully, I received a call redirecting me to the new terminal. The new facility looks impressive, and I hope it streamlines the travel process better than before.” Families bidding farewell to loved ones boarding Air India Express flights to Bhubaneswar received prior notifications about the terminal change, enhancing their confidence in the airport’s updated operational protocols. Pune’s Member of Parliament and Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, graced the terminal’s opening, highlighting its significance for the city. “This marks a pivotal moment for Pune’s aviation sector. The new terminal promises enhanced passenger comfort with its advanced features. Although inaugurated in March, operational delays due to pending approvals have now been resolved, with our focus now shifting to runway extension plans.” Initially, 14 flights by Air India and Air India Express operated from the new terminal on its first day. Airport authorities confirmed that by Monday, operations for all IndiGo flights would transition to the new facility in phases, marking a significant operational shift.

Amid the enthusiasm, concerns about traffic management between the old and new terminals loomed large among flyers. A passenger expressed scepticism, saying, “I anticipate traffic snarls as operations divide between the terminals. Adequate coordination between airport authorities and traffic police will be crucial to manage this situation effectively.” As Pune airport navigates through the initial phase of terminal transition, stakeholders remain hopeful that any teething issues will be swiftly addressed, ensuring a seamless travel experience for passengers in the days ahead. The launch of Pune’s new terminal underscores the city’s commitment to modernizing its aviation infrastructure, poised to elevate both passenger convenience and operational efficiency in the region.
