Kolkata Braces for Weekend Downpour

Kolkata is bracing for heavy rainfall as a low-pressure system forms over the Bay of Bengal. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata has issued a heavy rain alert for the city and several other districts in South Bengal, including Howrah, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas. The expected downpour coincides with the Trinamool Congress’s significant July 21 rally, potentially affecting the event.

Official at Regional Meteorological Centre, indicated that the low-pressure area is anticipated to develop over the Bay of Bengal by Friday. “If the system forms as expected, Kolkata and the surrounding South Bengal districts can anticipate heavy rain spells,” stated Biswas. He elaborated that such weather systems during the monsoon season are known to bring intense rainfall. The weather forecast predicts scattered showers for Kolkata until Friday, which may not be very significant. However, the persistent cloud cover is expected to keep temperatures in check, preventing any significant rise in mercury levels. This respite from the heat, albeit temporary, is likely to provide some relief to the residents.

The impending weather system is a typical monsoon feature, and its development will be closely monitored by weather scientists. These systems can bring about rapid changes in weather conditions, often leading to heavy rain and thunderstorms. The meteorological department will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves, ensuring that the public and authorities are well-informed and prepared. Residents of Kolkata and the affected South Bengal districts are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions. Heavy rain can lead to waterlogging and traffic disruptions, and it is prudent to plan travel accordingly. The city’s drainage systems will also be put to the test, and municipal authorities are expected to be on high alert to address any issues promptly.

As Kolkata prepares for this weather event, the importance of being well-informed and ready cannot be overstated. With timely updates from the meteorological department and proactive measures from the authorities, the city aims to navigate the challenges posed by the heavy rain alert effectively.
