Hansgrohe Group Launches Groundbreaking Recycling Technology for Plastics

Hansgrohe Group, renowned for its premium bathroom and kitchen products, has unveiled a pioneering recycling initiative at its Offenburg/Elgersweier production site. In collaboration with ImpulsTec, the company has introduced a state-of-the-art recycling process designed specifically for galvanized plastics, marking a significant advancement towards sustainable manufacturing practices.

The newly launched recycling facility represents a technological milestone, allowing Hansgrohe to close the material cycle within its operations. By utilizing a custom-developed process, the facility efficiently processes production waste from chrome-plated components, extracting and recycling decoated ABS plastics. This recycled material is then reintegrated into the manufacturing process to create new parts, thereby reducing the need for raw material extraction and minimizing environmental impact. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on June 14, Hansgrohe SE spokesperson highlighted the ecological benefits of the initiative, stating, “With this technical breakthrough, we are reinforcing our commitment to environmental stewardship. By eliminating the need for new resource extraction through recycling, we are safeguarding our ecosystems and advancing our green transformation journey.”

The recycling process itself employs advanced electro-hydraulic shredding technology. Chrome-plated ABS scrap components undergo decoating via shock wave treatment, coupled with pre-shredding and magnetic separation to extract a concentrated metal fraction, primarily comprising copper and nickel. This metal fraction is then sold for smelting, ensuring that all valuable metals are returned to the raw material cycle. The recycled ABS plastic recovered from the process is used in the production of new products, illustrating Hansgrohe’s dedication to circular economy principles. The recycling machine, capable of handling up to 100 tons of chrome-plated plastic annually, symbolizes a significant step towards sustainable manufacturing practices.

Hansgrohe’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond environmental benefits to encompass economic advantages as well. By reducing resource consumption and optimizing production efficiency, the company aims to enhance its operational sustainability while delivering high-quality, durable products to consumers. Hansgrohe Group’s adoption of advanced plastic recycling technology shows its leadership in sustainable innovation within the manufacturing sector. With the launch of this groundbreaking initiative, Hansgrohe not only sets new standards for environmental responsibility but also reaffirms its position as a frontrunner in driving positive change through technological advancement and corporate responsibility.
