New Town Kolkata Permits Footpath Use for Construction Material Storage

The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has introduced a new regulation permitting developers with valid building plans to stack construction materials on footpaths. The initiative, announced through a recent notification, mandates that a 1.5-meter gap must be maintained between the construction site and the materials stack, facilitating unobstructed pedestrian movement.

NKDA had mandated that all prospective developers in New Town submit comprehensive construction management plans outlining the method for material storage and the disposal of demolition waste and rubbish. Only after approval of these plans would building plans be sanctioned, underscoring the authority’s commitment to streamlined urban development and civic order. The decision reflects NKDA’s pragmatic approach to balancing urban development with public convenience in New Town, one of Kolkata’s rapidly expanding areas.

By allowing controlled use of footpaths for material stacking, the authority aims to mitigate logistical challenges faced by builders while upholding pedestrian rights to safe and accessible walkways. Officials from NKDA have indicated that a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) detailing the implementation of these guidelines will be released in the coming week. This SOP will outline specific protocols and responsibilities for builders to adhere to while utilizing footpath space for construction purposes.

The move comes amidst a surge in construction activities across New Town Kolkata, driven by robust urbanization and infrastructural development initiatives. It is anticipated that the revised regulations will provide much-needed flexibility for developers without compromising on public safety and convenience. NKDA’s proactive stance underscores its commitment to sustainable urban growth and efficient management of construction activities. By enforcing clear guidelines and standards, the authority aims to foster an environment conducive to both economic growth and civic harmony.
