MoS Announces Significant Growth in Indian Drone Sector

India’s drone industry is experiencing substantial growth, as highlighted by Minister of State for Civil Aviation in a recent Rajya Sabha session. The minister’s remarks underscore the sector’s dynamic expansion, with significant developments in training, certification, and manufacturing.

According to officials , the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a notable 16,000 Remote Pilot Certificates (RPC) to date, reflecting the burgeoning interest and participation in drone operations across the country. This figure underscores the increasing number of individuals and businesses engaging in drone technology and applications. The sector’s growth is further supported by the establishment of 116 Remote Pilot Training Organisations (RPTOs), all of which have received approval from the DGCA. These training centres are crucial in building a skilled workforce capable of operating and managing unmanned aerial systems (UAS), thereby bolstering the industry’s foundation.

In addition, the DGCA has granted type certification to 70 UAS models, indicating a well-regulated and standardised approach to drone technology. The certification process ensures that drones meet safety and operational standards, enhancing their reliability and functionality in various applications. The industry’s manufacturing capabilities are also expanding, with 48 companies currently producing UAS models domestically. This growth is supported by the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme administered by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Under this scheme, 23 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have been shortlisted, with 11 specialising in drone component manufacturing. This initiative is aimed at fostering innovation and boosting local production capabilities within the drone sector.

As the industry continues to grow, it is expected to play a pivotal role in various sectors, including agriculture, logistics, surveillance, and more.
