Ports Ministry Greenlights Rs 3,300 Crore Andhra Plans

A substantial set of proposals valued at Rs 3,300 crore from Andhra Pradesh has been approved by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways. This decision, announced in Parliament on Friday, includes various projects focused on enhancing port infrastructure and developing coastal berths.

The Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, disclosed that 13 projects, valued at approximately Rs 2,500 crore, are to receive financial assistance under the Sagarmala scheme. The scheme is designed to modernise and expand India’s port infrastructure, aiming to improve maritime connectivity and operational efficiency. Among the projects to be supported are developments such as Ro-Pax ferries, passenger jetties, fishing harbours, and port modernisation initiatives. Funds amounting to Rs 450 crore have already been sanctioned for these projects, indicating a significant commitment to Andhra Pradesh’s maritime infrastructure.

In addition, 36 projects undertaken by the Visakhapatnam Port Authority and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) in Andhra Pradesh have been highlighted, with a total investment of Rs 4,600 crore. Of these, 22 projects, worth Rs 2,530 crore, have been completed, while 14 projects, valued at Rs 2,070 crore, are at various stages of implementation. The greenlighting of these projects underscores the central government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh. The focus on port and coastal development is expected to stimulate regional economic growth, improve trade efficiency, and contribute to the state’s overall development.

Through these approvals, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways aims to optimise the country’s port facilities and integrate advanced infrastructure into the national transport network. The ongoing support and funding are anticipated to drive further advancements in the sector, enhancing both operational capabilities and economic benefits across the region.
