BMC Directed to Build Toilets at Bandra East

The Bombay High Court has mandated the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to construct new toilets outside Bandra East Railway Station. This directive also calls for coordinated efforts from the Railway authorities, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The court’s decision comes in response to a public interest litigation that brought to light the severe inconvenience faced by passengers following the demolition of existing toilet facilities to make way for a new dispensary. The bench, consisting of Chief Justice Devendra Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar, underscored the urgent need for reinstating these essential amenities to cater to the needs of the daily commuters. In their ruling, the judges emphasised the importance of a collaborative approach, suggesting that if required, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) could be enlisted to expedite the process. This collaborative strategy is anticipated to significantly enhance the passenger experience at one of Mumbai’s busiest railway hubs.

The court’s intervention highlights a crucial aspect of urban infrastructure management, particularly in high-traffic areas where basic amenities are critical to commuter satisfaction and public health. The absence of adequate sanitation facilities at key transport nodes can lead to substantial inconvenience, affecting thousands of passengers who rely on these services daily. The BMC, MCGM, and MMRDA have been directed to formulate and implement a plan for the construction of these toilets within a specified timeframe. This directive aims to address the gap created by the removal of previous facilities and to ensure that the new provisions meet the necessary standards for public convenience.
