Ernakulam Struggles with Rising Waters in Major Rivers

Ernakulam district is grappling with severe flooding following persistent rainfall over the past 24 hours. Areas such as Choondy, Idamalayar, and Perumbavoor have recorded substantial rainfall, with Idamalayar receiving the highest at 187 mm. Choondy followed with 97.5 mm, Perumbavoor 87 mm, and Kalamassery 86 mm. The relentless downpour has led to elevated water levels in key rivers, notably the Periyar and Chalakudy, causing widespread concern.

The district has already experienced significant inundation, prompting the activation of several rehabilitation camps. “We are fully prepared to address any emergency situations,” stated the district collector. “Instructions have been issued to all government agencies to remain vigilant. Measures to mitigate the impact of the heavy rains are currently underway,” he added. Despite a slight reduction in rainfall, the rising levels in the Chalakudy and Periyar rivers remain a critical issue. The Periyar River, in particular, has reached alarming levels following the discharge of water from the Bhoothathankettu Dam. On Tuesday, the river exceeded danger levels at the Marthandavarma Bridge, marking the highest water level since 2019. The overflow has submerged the Mahadeva Temple at Aluva Manappuram. In addition, all six shutters of the Malankara Dam were opened, leading to the Muvattupuzha River also surpassing danger levels at three locations.

The Chalakudy River is similarly affected due to the heavy discharge from the Peringalkuthu Dam. In the Eloor municipality alone, approximately 300 families have been impacted. Water has breached several residences in Kunissery, Nedumbassery village, and areas including Ilahiya Nagar, Kothamangalam, and Paravur, resulting in damage to seven homes. In response to the flooding, the district administration has imposed travel restrictions in severely affected eastern areas. However, the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has reported no disruptions to flight operations at this time. To assist with relief efforts, CIAL has pledged Rs 2 crore to the Chief Minister’s relief fund. Additionally, the Kerala Media Academy has rescheduled examinations for the Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Communication, initially set for July 31, to August 5-15.

Some areas, including Panampilly Nagar and the KSRTC bus terminal, are also experiencing waterlogging, further complicating the situation. The ongoing efforts aim to manage and alleviate the widespread impact of this severe weather event.
