Heavy Rainfall Predicted in Mumbai from August 3

Mumbai is set to experience increased rainfall starting August 3, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing yellow and orange alerts for the city and neighbouring areas. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall due to the strengthening of westerly winds, signalling a significant change in weather patterns.

From August 1, Mumbai is under a yellow alert, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Additionally, a moderate rain warning has been issued for July 31. For August 3, Thane and Palghar are under an orange alert, suggesting heavy to very heavy rainfall in certain regions. The IMD’s Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded intermittent rainfall of 10.4mm and 15.5mm, respectively, in the 24 hours ending at 8.30am on Tuesday. This rainfall has contributed to the city’s water stocks, which have risen to 10.9 lakh million litres, or 75% of total capacity. This marks a slight increase from last year’s figure of 10.7 lakh million litres, or 74%, on the same date. Consequently, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has lifted the 10% water cut previously imposed.

The IMD attributes the expected increase in rainfall to the strengthening of westerly winds, which are likely to bring heavy showers to Mumbai and its metropolitan region. This forecast comes after the city experienced 176mm of rainfall in a single day in the previous week, highlighting the monsoon’s unpredictable nature. The improved water stocks have provided some relief to the city’s residents, who had been coping with the water cut. The BMC’s decision to lift the cut reflects the positive impact of the recent rainfall on the city’s water reserves. However, residents are advised to stay vigilant and prepare for the upcoming heavy rainfall.
