Mumbai’s Road Repair Push Before Ganeshotsav

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has committed to completing all pothole repairs by mid-August. This pledge is particularly significant as the logistical preparations for the festival are set to commence around the same period.

With Ganeshotsav scheduled to begin on September 6, 2024, the BMC’s timely intervention aims to enhance road safety and accessibility during one of Mumbai’s most bustling times of the year. As of now, the civic body reports that over 11,000 potholes have been repaired during this monsoon season. The BMC’s commitment was underscored by Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister, Mangal Prasad Lodha, who has set a firm deadline of August 18 for the completion of all pothole repairs.

This deadline is intended to align with the logistical demands of the festival, which requires the transportation of Ganpati idols and other preparations starting at least 20 to 25 days prior to the event. The BMC has faced considerable scrutiny over pothole management in recent months, particularly following July’s record rainfall, which exacerbated road conditions across the city. In response to public criticism, the BMC has issued show-cause notices and imposed fines on contractors responsible for road maintenance. This swift action underscores the civic body’s commitment to addressing infrastructural deficiencies.

Lodha has clarified new regulatory measures for Ganpati Mandals. Starting this year, these organisations will benefit from a one-time permission scheme, allowing them to operate under a five-year permit if they have adhered to regulations for the past decade. This initiative is designed to streamline the regulatory process and reduce administrative burdens for long-standing festival organisers.
