New Helpline Targets Pune’s Pothole Problem

Pune: In a bid to tackle the persistent issue of potholes exacerbated by continuous digging and relentless rainfall, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has inaugurated a new helpline for citizens to report pothole-related issues across the city. This initiative aligns with a broader, ongoing campaign aimed at repairing the numerous craters that have emerged on Pune’s roadways.

According to a press release from the Road Department of the PMC, the newly launched helpline is designed to streamline the reporting process, allowing residents to easily notify authorities of problematic potholes. This move is part of the PMC’s larger strategy to address road maintenance issues, which have been amplified by the city’s recent infrastructural disruptions and adverse weather conditions.

The recent repair campaign, which commenced over the weekend, saw PMC engineers working through Saturday night, Sunday, and Monday nights to address the city’s pothole crisis. The repairs were prioritised during the brief period of dry weather, with the focus primarily on using concrete and asphalt to patch up the damaged roads. The campaign, overseen by the Chief Engineer (Roads), aimed to restore road safety and functionality as swiftly as possible. The initiative follows a series of citizen complaints and heightened public scrutiny over the deteriorating condition of Pune’s roads. The PMC’s decision to launch a dedicated helpline reflects an effort to enhance transparency and responsiveness in its road maintenance operations. However, despite these efforts, local residents have expressed ongoing dissatisfaction with the quality of road repairs and the timeliness of maintenance work.

Experts have voiced concerns that the temporary patches applied might not withstand the city’s heavy traffic and weather conditions. There are calls for a more sustainable approach to road repair and maintenance, including the potential use of advanced monitoring technologies such as drones to proactively identify and address road damage.
