Vastrapur Lake Revamp Delayed Amid Budget Issues

Ahmedabad’s Vastrapur Lake has encountered significant hurdles, with escalating costs and potential delays threatening its timely completion. The initial budget of Rs 5.15 crore, allocated for the renovation of the lake and its surrounding amenities, has now surged to Rs 8.2 crore due to design modifications. This revised cost will be reviewed in the upcoming water and sewerage committee meeting scheduled for August 9.

The lake, which sustained substantial damage from heavy rainfall in July 2022, has been under extensive repair for nearly a year. The damage included cave-ins and a compromised walkway, necessitating considerable investment to restore the site. Originally, the proposal aimed to renovate the walkway and enhance the surrounding area, but unforeseen complications have driven up costs and altered the project timeline. In February, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) announced the lake’s closure until August 27, an extension influenced by the ongoing challenges. Additionally, a separate proposal for the renovation of the amphitheatre within the lake’s vicinity, with a budget of Rs 4.63 crore, is set to be discussed at the upcoming roads and buildings committee meeting.

Senior AMC officials have indicated that the modifications to the lake’s development design are unlikely to meet the anticipated completion date, which could delay the reopening. The recent heavy rains exacerbated soil erosion and led to an increase in rodent activity due to food waste being discarded by visitors, further complicating the renovation efforts. In August 2022, the AMC had approved a tender exceeding Rs 1 crore to reconstruct the embankment behind the Narsinh Mehta statue, part of a broader initiative to enhance the lake’s infrastructure. However, issues such as malfunctioning music systems, CCTV cameras, and fountains have persisted for years, highlighting the ongoing maintenance challenges.

The escalating costs and extended timeline underscore the complexities involved in large-scale urban renovation projects. As the AMC works to address these issues, the community remains hopeful for the restoration of Vastrapur Lake as a revitalised urban asset.
