Chandigarh’s Sector 8 Parking to Get Revamp

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has taken a significant step towards revitalising the Sector 8 underground parking facility by finalising a bid for its comprehensive overhaul. Six months after issuing the tender, the MC has accepted the lowest bid of Rs75 lakh, against an initial estimate of Rs85 lakh. Out of four submissions, this bid was deemed the most economical while meeting the project’s requirements.

The revamp project, which integrates both civil and electrical works, will commence shortly. “Given the scope of work, which includes both structural and electrical components, a composite tender was issued. The successful bidder is now finalised, and we anticipate commencing work soon after the necessary paperwork is completed,” a municipal source revealed. The project budget allocates a substantial portion for civil works, including the restoration of concrete columns, slabs, and beams with state-of-the-art technology. The electrical component of the project is equally crucial, encompassing the installation of CCTV cameras and other security features to enhance safety for both vehicles and users. “Ensuring the security of the facility is a priority, and thus a significant budget is allocated for electrical works,” the source added.

The underground parking facility, capable of accommodating approximately 50 vehicles, is strategically located in a commercial hub, providing valuable parking solutions for numerous private offices in the vicinity. The engineering department has planned the revamp to be completed within four to five months, aiming to significantly improve the facility’s functionality and safety. This overhaul marks a notable development in the MC’s efforts to upgrade ageing infrastructure. Many other underground parking facilities in Chandigarh, including those in Sector 8 and Sector 17, have faced prolonged closures due to safety and maintenance issues.

Some of these facilities have been barricaded due to their deteriorated condition, highlighting the necessity for such revitalisation projects. The Sector 8 revamp is anticipated to set a precedent for future infrastructure upgrades within the city, addressing both safety concerns and enhancing public amenities.
