Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has instructed the contractor responsible for the concretisation of Aarey Colony road to undertake repairs at their own expense, following an inspection that revealed significant issues with the road’s quality.
This directive came after Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) inspection, which uncovered cracks, surface deterioration, and inadequate texture in the newly laid stretch. According to the BMC, the contractor’s financial deductions will cover both the cost of rectifying the defects and an additional penalty. The corporation has emphasised that any future defects will incur double the penalties, and repeated failures could lead to the contractor being barred from participating in future BMC projects.
The road, a crucial stretch from the Aarey Colony entry off the Western Express Highway to the Aarey VIP guest house, extends seven kilometres. The concretisation work, which includes the repair of 1,190 square metres of defective surface, is part of a larger INR 36 crore project. The BMC has imposed a penalty of INR 28.45 lakh on the contractor for the substandard work. In addition to the contractor’s reprimand, the quality monitoring agency, tasked with overseeing the project, has also been penalised for failing to ensure compliance with the contract’s quality standards.
