Amazon Unveils Major Data Centre Expansion in Hyderabad

Amazon Inc. has announced a major expansion of its data centre operations in the city. The expansion comes on the heels of a successful meeting between Amazon’s senior leadership team, led by the Vice President of AWS Data Centre Planning and Delivery, and a delegation from the Telangana government.

This strategic move underscores Hyderabad’s growing importance as a key hub in Amazon’s global cloud infrastructure network. The city already hosts Amazon’s largest corporate building worldwide and became a pivotal location for the company’s dedicated air cargo network, Amazon Air, which was launched in 2023. Currently, Amazon Web Services (AWS) operates three large data centres in Hyderabad. The latest plans involve the establishment of new hyperscale data centres, which are anticipated to bolster AWS’s capacity for delivering advanced AI and machine learning services. Although specific details regarding the scale of this expansion were not disclosed, the initiative is expected to significantly enhance AWS’s cloud capabilities in India.

The Vice President of AWS, following the discussions, expressed enthusiasm about the expanded operations, stating, “We are thrilled by the opportunity to deepen our cloud infrastructure investments in Hyderabad, Telangana. This expansion is a vital component of our broader strategy for India and will play a crucial role in advancing AWS’s capabilities in artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies. Our commitment to Telangana reflects our dedication to supporting the state’s digital ambitions and contributing to India’s vision of a trillion-dollar digital economy.”

For the Telangana government, this expansion represents a notable win. The IT and Industries Minister, who spearheaded the discussions, assured Amazon of the state’s full support and incentives to facilitate the expansion. The minister highlighted the positive and fruitful nature of the negotiations, anticipating that the increased presence of Amazon in Hyderabad will cement the state’s status as a leading centre for cloud and data centre infrastructure in India. Amazon’s expanded footprint in Hyderabad will further reinforce the city’s strategic significance in the global tech ecosystem, enhancing its role as a key player in the digital transformation of the region.
